I was able to visit my Granddaddy's brother, Larkin last week. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Larkin is the youngest of Robert and Vesta's children, and he is the only sibling living. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ8_iAN-CirkjRq7ytdynb4dR2VF5HK1VGZM3-X1krVGmdq9HRQnbZRPEOWRhdkuO87HcpLvftKFUBfQOA43Lo_7pvrGnwyQ8u7mO3XHF8uhirlx5cDNppkDT70MrstvUmFYka8eft8wQ/s1600/IMG_20150324_182736960.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ8_iAN-CirkjRq7ytdynb4dR2VF5HK1VGZM3-X1krVGmdq9HRQnbZRPEOWRhdkuO87HcpLvftKFUBfQOA43Lo_7pvrGnwyQ8u7mO3XHF8uhirlx5cDNppkDT70MrstvUmFYka8eft8wQ/s1600/IMG_20150324_182736960.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is Bob and Larkin</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Larkin told me a little about his mother Vesta. He said that she went to the Assembly of God in Stockbridge Georgia. She walked there, back and forth and never missed a service. He bragged about her corn bread and green beans. He told me that the reason her corn bread was so good is that she used grease to flavor it and it was "so good!". </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Vesta and the kids would work in the fields gathering cotton. He said that when the kids were in the fields, some friends would walk by and say. "Do you want to go to the creek?" and the kids would throw down their tools before Vesta could protest, and they would go running to the "Short Bridge" creek to go swimming. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Larkin, Bob "JR", Robert, Vesta</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I asked Larkin about the famous myth about Great Granddaddy's hidden jar of money. Larkin told me a story about finding the jar and taking a $20.00 bill out of it. Larkin was working at the service station that is just down the street from the house in Stockbridge GA. He made $1.00 per day. He said that he would see a Mr. Miller ride a bicycle by there. The bicycle had a horn and lights and a basket. Larkin wanted the bicycle real bad. He cashed in his war bonds to buy the bicycle. Later, he and a friend named Luke went to the station to get their parents 6 bottles of coke. Luke was peddling and Larkin was on the handle bars holding the cokes. The bike hit a rut in the dirt road and they all went flying. The bike hit a sign post and the wheel was torn up. Since his bike was messed up, he needed money to fix it. Larkin was walking near the barn and tripped over a oven door laying underneath the mulch and leaves. He lifted up the door and found a mason jar and took a $20.00 out of it. He got in a lot of trouble, and the jar of money was hidden somewhere else on the property. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Larkin married twice. First to "Emmie". They had 3 children; Sandra, Barry and Angela. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ_gDl8Ox9pIczCG83Haw7OTFPOja2ZVGWXW9e5Qn9N3HILw2Cxp6hfmXMs_R6UXl7OlSJSOBBDjJq1Z3cxtlf13BNgsTsgIXlCH2IIp3CZB_2YIZHSac33_asMvR_AUC3_O-2MHuc6ZY/s1600/IMG_20150324_174229028.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ_gDl8Ox9pIczCG83Haw7OTFPOja2ZVGWXW9e5Qn9N3HILw2Cxp6hfmXMs_R6UXl7OlSJSOBBDjJq1Z3cxtlf13BNgsTsgIXlCH2IIp3CZB_2YIZHSac33_asMvR_AUC3_O-2MHuc6ZY/s1600/IMG_20150324_174229028.jpg" height="227" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Larkin, Emmie, Myrl, Ralph</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Later he married Betty. He said Betty had a nick name of Ms. Perfect Lips. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Betty and Larkin had one child, Robin. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvpZ15Q9-vXXiV4kGGayciwRDkMqZ71-q2tPF_yx7vvvAa7pA7TfpQuPlt81gSkZ3G8TQM6xzItQ2QQlDC82CicHo21Up8re_45hBL1DtHQAy9ienA5xqQC8Tgumqemrkw3WPQA7qrKjo/s1600/IMG_20150324_182707976.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvpZ15Q9-vXXiV4kGGayciwRDkMqZ71-q2tPF_yx7vvvAa7pA7TfpQuPlt81gSkZ3G8TQM6xzItQ2QQlDC82CicHo21Up8re_45hBL1DtHQAy9ienA5xqQC8Tgumqemrkw3WPQA7qrKjo/s1600/IMG_20150324_182707976.jpg" height="223" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I asked Larkin how he met Betty. He said that he went with Bob to the grocery store, where Betty was working. Bob had to pay his weekly tab. Larkin decided to buy a coke. He said "Now this is a true story, I put the coke on the counter and she leaned over and grabbed my collar, pulled me to her and gave me a kiss on the lips. We were together ever since." </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
He said that he felt that Betty's dad was more like a real dad to him than his own. Not because his dad was mean or anything, but that he just didn't show affection or love. Betty's dad was tight with his money, and he always felt real proud when Betty's dad would say "Come on Larkin, lets go get a coke." </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I looked at a lot of pictures with Larkin. He talked about how much he loved his brothers. He talked about getting a jukebox but that Ralph really wanted it, so he gave it to him. He has a fond memory of riding in his Dad's Model A truck with Flo and Marjorie with the top down and their hair blowing, "having a good time." He also said he would go to the sauna with Bob and Stanley and that he enjoyed that a lot. </div>

That means I am starting over from scratch! We are on week two. This week's goals are to conduct self interviews and family interviews. I have reached out to Larkin's daughter, to see if she can help me arrange a meeting with him to do an interview. Fingers crossed it will work out.<br />
<br />
In the mean time, my projects are to gather the sources for my parents, and their parent's births, marriages, and deaths. Yes, I may "know" what the dates are. But, I need to back it up with proof. Tonight I worked on getting some of the marriage licenses out of hiding. I have pulled my paternal grandparent's certificate.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhdyX7F9XufVuC0N5NW04uxOH07j1_bpc1LSfquFW_UuK_esgUpPR0QPgw7e5zfYpNHZ1A9NgT1ZgJQICnRVziXDkbCm5tvIo9cPnOKTHtv8bP2zLO3HrJaALaDAaeNeK49hZILMLX8WY/s1600/marriage+certificate.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhdyX7F9XufVuC0N5NW04uxOH07j1_bpc1LSfquFW_UuK_esgUpPR0QPgw7e5zfYpNHZ1A9NgT1ZgJQICnRVziXDkbCm5tvIo9cPnOKTHtv8bP2zLO3HrJaALaDAaeNeK49hZILMLX8WY/s1600/marriage+certificate.jpg" height="320" width="260" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Marriage between Robert Stanley Hicks of Stockbridge Georgia and Miss Marjorie Roberts of Atlanta Georgia on the 31 day of January 1947. (I hope...it is hard to read, and I only have this scanned copy. I'll have to ask Aunt Linda if this is correct.) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also pulled my maternal grandparent's certificate; Harry Francis Goins and Carrie Inez Hinote (Willkes). But, I realize now that although I have a copy. I do not have it scanned. That task will go on the "to do list". That will be a future task as my scanner died a few months ago. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Other tasks I want to complete this week are to re-do or at least re-visit the folders I have for my grandparents and see what is in them and sort-of organize it. I don't want to get too far ahead of myself. I am also going to pull the birth and death records I have for my grandparents. (And Chris's people too.) I am only going so far out as the grandparents until I get all the documents and cite the sources. Then I will go forward with the rest of the lines. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finally, one goal is to not stay up too late when I have to work the next morning. It is 10:45pm now, so I am off !</div>

</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="color: red;">Edit: another genealogist suggested that this is probably actually the "high jump" instead of pole vaulting.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJFdrcNuGd0-3Iao0c4RRszEqZuCL25Fv1blHt_TZ4G8LXpPUhoLnK-boJqw37adYO2dgfc13DnxXx8gJ-nAvLThqLLQYN5Anl7gIUS21tKzUrWoErbkGDxDVsJKQOGyytoQSAaJoMZMY/s1600/Robert+Stanley+Hicks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJFdrcNuGd0-3Iao0c4RRszEqZuCL25Fv1blHt_TZ4G8LXpPUhoLnK-boJqw37adYO2dgfc13DnxXx8gJ-nAvLThqLLQYN5Anl7gIUS21tKzUrWoErbkGDxDVsJKQOGyytoQSAaJoMZMY/s1600/Robert+Stanley+Hicks.jpg" height="220" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I don't know anything about my Grandaddy playing sports. But, he clearly did. But when? Because I can faintly see a guy in a particular hat in the background, I think this may have been when he was in the Army, and the hat on that guy looks like the ones I see of uniformed men in other photographs I have. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJGoIHkiaU8t3_Kzc0MoNGJfLN2IThcRv5m4rvMkzq_1-w2oF2u0rQ0YsSYu6i0iGemJ4zsU_Wq3ajBsEf7vml1zcHkYtDpXx-zgKxGX-JXoAsOOKKfhrVYeILC_KJSVoyZUwTzkEyJXQ/s1600/Robert+Hicks+in+middle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJGoIHkiaU8t3_Kzc0MoNGJfLN2IThcRv5m4rvMkzq_1-w2oF2u0rQ0YsSYu6i0iGemJ4zsU_Wq3ajBsEf7vml1zcHkYtDpXx-zgKxGX-JXoAsOOKKfhrVYeILC_KJSVoyZUwTzkEyJXQ/s1600/Robert+Hicks+in+middle.jpg" height="215" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
See the hats? Grandaddy, Robert Stanley Hicks is the guy in the middle, 4th from the left. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have this other photograph as well. Is this from the same time period? How would I find out?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What could the "L" stand for? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It looks like they had a mascot, a black kitten. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red;">Edit: another genealogist suggests "The Lions" perhaps with a kitty mascot?</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Bessie Hicks (Robert Henry Hicks sister)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In August I had the pleasure to spend a little time with Margaret Edmonson. Margaret is the daughter of Bessie Kathrine Hicks and John Truman Andrew (Andrue) Williams. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will share with you some of the stories she told me. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Margaret remembers that Bessie said that Larkin and Mary Jane (Bessie's parents) came from Arkansas to Georgia in a covered wagon. Bessie (b. 17 August 1906) said that sometimes when she would get tired of riding, that she would get down and walk beside the wagon. When they were kids, Bessie and her brother Clarence got in trouble for tying two cow's tails together. They thought they would do that to make it easier to "bring the cows home" but instead one cow went left and one went right and it didn't work out as planned. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Bessie's first husband was a Mr. Reid. I do not have his first name. Margaret said that Mr. Reid was killed while he was hitch hiking on or in a railroad car. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We don't know how or when. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On October 5 1925 Bessie Reid and Truman Williams (b. 18 Jan 1900) were married at the courthouse in Dalton Georgia. They both worked in the mills. One Christmas after the mills had closed down, Bessie and Truman sold bootleg liquor. They dug a big flower bed and put the
liquor in there and put the dirt and flowers on top. They also hit it
in the door frames of the house. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Selling it was the only way they could get
any money.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Bessie and Truman had three children. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Truman and Bessie have left an awesome bible full of family information. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'll post detailed pictures in a later post. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Truman died 7 April 1938. He had surgery on his neck, and unfortunately a blood clot traveled to his heart. He was 38 years old. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD7VLOKXAChJovX2pceofrgDJ34ZRX6ZQZZGYOZI0Ll-WNQ4cTW1HTW7tg6AE8k5braUnlfCfSmW3gmo65a2dfXYo54rcT-JtVXT5AnkKPFCjRR8e954t_dSLJ88ZkUM1NR_bF6dOTUEU/s1600/72211946_131005126927.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD7VLOKXAChJovX2pceofrgDJ34ZRX6ZQZZGYOZI0Ll-WNQ4cTW1HTW7tg6AE8k5braUnlfCfSmW3gmo65a2dfXYo54rcT-JtVXT5AnkKPFCjRR8e954t_dSLJ88ZkUM1NR_bF6dOTUEU/s1600/72211946_131005126927.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>

<a href="http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=72211946" target="_blank">click here to see his findagrave memorial</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
When J.T. Died (Margaret was 10yrs
old), Bessie took her 3 kids Jeanette, Margaret, & Ralph and
lived with several of her brothers on and off for a few years. They
were at “Uncle John and Aunt Bea's” house then moved to “Uncle
Henry and Vesta's house” they spent one school year there. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
At one time when they were living with Aunt Bea (Beatrice) and Uncle John, Margaret and the other kids were being loud. At that time her grandfather, Larkin (Robert Henry's dad) was staying there. He told the kids that they would have a contest, whoever could stay quiet the longest would win and get a prize. The prize was a box with five handles. Margaret "won". He told her to come over and slapped her on the face. He said that was the prize. Palm of hand = box and 5 fingers were the 5 handles. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
While they were staying at Uncle Johns' house, he wanted Bessie to give him her money to hold for her. She didn't want to and they had a big argument. Bessie gathered the kids and they started walking down the road even though it was almost night time. John's kid Grady, drove up and tried to get them to get in the car/truck and go back to the house. Bessie told the kids not to talk to him. They went into the woods so he couldn't follow in the truck. They went to a farm house. The farmer took them to town the next day to rent a house. </div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Later Bessie and the kids would move in with Robert and Vesta for a school year. Vesta
would make the kids hot chocolate in the mornings for breakfast
before they got on a school bus to go to school. They would eat pinto
beans and cornbread for dinner. Sometimes Vesta would open a can of
tomatoes that she had canned earlier in the year. “Uncle Henry” would give the kids a
quarter every Saturday for an allowance. They would walk to the
corner store. Sometimes they would buy tobacco and hide it behind the
barn. They would roll it and smoke it. They would get in trouble
because Vesta could smell the odor of cigarettes. She would get on to
them. When she turned her back the kids would go “yeah, yeah”.
Vesta was hard of hearing, so she didn't know. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Bessie married for a third time to Robert Marion Moon on 27 April 1945 at the court house in Atlanta Georgia. -Bessie's 3rd husband said
she died (19 September 1949) when she went to the woodpile for supplies for the stove and
the woodpile fell on her. She was 43 years old. Though she had a third husband she was buried with her 2nd husband John Truman
Williams in the Trion Cemetery. </div>

I've been really terrible about keeping up with my family newsletter blog. But, here's to new beginnings. On Wednesdays I'm going to participate in "Wordless Wednesdays". I am going to post pictures of people that probably belong in the Hicks or Hunsucker line of the family. These will be pictures of people that I don't know. So...please let me know if you can identify the photographs. <br />
<br />
I will also be blogging more about the family, as I have time. Please keep coming back!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Today I spent two hours with Margaret Williams Edmonson. She brought out her father's bible. Bessie, her mother (great granddaddy's sister) had filled up the pages on marriages, births and deaths. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am going to write up a bigger entry on the blog about Bessie and her family. But, until then here is a little snippet of information. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Mr. Truman Williams of Dalton Ga and Bessie Reid of Dalton Ga </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
on October 5 1925 at Court House. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Bessie had been married to a Mr. Reid, who had died. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Mr. Williams was her 2nd husband. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Stay tuned. Hopefully I will get the bigger story up here in a week or two. </div>

She also sent me this picture of him in a band. We are pretty sure he is the second guy from the left on the top row. He is partially hidden by the guy in front of him. What kind of band is this? Does anyone recognize these uniforms?</div>

Census from the Social Security Administration dated 15, June 1966</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Addressed to Olley G Hicks to use in lieu of a birth certificate. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Showing results from the 1910 census of Oklahoma for an "Olie Hix" in the family of Larkin and Mary J Hix. This is one good reason to look for alternate spellings of the names you are looking for in the census. The census takers didn't always know how to spell the names correctly, or they didn't ask, or they asked a neighbor or someone who wasn't sure, or the people themselves didn't know how to spell it. In this case Larkin and Mary Jane Hicks are not that far from my generation, or my grandfather's in any case. So, I was surprised that just only 100 years ago (!) the name was different. Because of this document, I also know to look for "Hix" in the censuses when I can't find someone I'm looking for. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I decided to do a blog entry on Olley, because this census record showed a different spelling, but once I got to researching him I found so many different spellings, that he was hard to locate. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The only thing I could find in my internet search was in the Social Security Death Index which showed that <u>Olley</u> Hicks died in August 1981. I know it is the correct person because the social security number on the census form and the social on the death index matched. The death index shows a birth date of 29 September 1903. I had 1904 in my "Ancestry" family tree. I got that date from "The Hicks Family and Allied Family Lines" booklet that was compiled by Cathy L Harris in 1987. (Daugter-in-law to Willena Hicks Harris I believe. Willena would be the niece of Olley.) <b>But wait! </b>The book has a different name/spelling too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On this Family Group Sheet near my thumb you can see that Cathy spelled it <u>"Olif"</u>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I decided to edit my "Ancestry" family tree to what the SS Death Index showed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I tried to look up Olley on findagrave.com. By now you know, that is my passion! I love digging through that website and creating virtual cemeteries to compile all my ancestors in one place. I was having no luck finding him. I tried all the different spellings and I tried both birth dates of 1903 and 1904. I decided to go another route and find his wife Pearl Lee Hicks first. I thought that if I could find her, there might be a link to her husband, or at least I would know what cemetery to search in, because it would be likely that Pearl and Olley would be in the same place. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZGa9HTLnS4OfN4-2z6NHhb8OkqZFZyMVxXYDRC7oB8Cb84YyM_tskJ3WxEFDMQVChjxtPCwFN7VKm1pNup7NHP598gZtwWvVp0uNBSIQVMU0UHLslKKrL038KSC6O4NBAXmG-q4GZzp4/s1600/Robert%252C+Pearl%252C+Ollie+Hicks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZGa9HTLnS4OfN4-2z6NHhb8OkqZFZyMVxXYDRC7oB8Cb84YyM_tskJ3WxEFDMQVChjxtPCwFN7VKm1pNup7NHP598gZtwWvVp0uNBSIQVMU0UHLslKKrL038KSC6O4NBAXmG-q4GZzp4/s1600/Robert%252C+Pearl%252C+Ollie+Hicks.jpg" height="250" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Labeled: Robert , Pearl, <u>Ollie</u> Hicks. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I believe I also see my grandmother, Marjorie Hicks on the far left there, though I have never seen her with her hair down, or long hair. We can see the back of the heads of two boys in the front. They are dressed identical, which leads me to believe it might be Lloyd and Floyd Harris, as twins are often forced to wear identical clothing by their mothers. The woman with the camera is Mildred Hicks. (wife of R. L Hicks son of Olley and Pearl, I believe.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Back to the story: I look up Pearl Lee Hicks on findagrave.com and I look in LaGrange, as that is the address on the SSI form. I guessed they didn't move. I got a hit! I found Pearl Lee Hicks on the Restlawn Memory Gardens memorial page and there was a picture of her there! You can look at her memorial page if you put in this number in the "findagrave" link at the top left of this blog page. 97621282 </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Yep! The same person! But her husband was not linked to her site, so I just went to the Restlawn Memory Garden's search page and type in "Hicks". I found him! But guess how his name is spelled? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
"<u>Olecy</u> G Hicks" ! There is no picture for me to compare, but the dates match. To see his memorial page type in this number on the findagrave link at the top of the page: 97621269 </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I added my own picture to the page though. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red;">Edit: 9-6-2014</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red;">His name was corrected on the search index to </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red;">"Oleey G Hicks" as it is on his marker. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red;">(another new spelling!)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have sent a request to the volunteers at findagrave for photos of the headstones or markers. While on the findagrave site, I got in contact with a nice woman named Sharon Patrick. She told me this little tidbit about Pearl. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Pearl Lee Hicks</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
b: Jan 30 1904</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
d: Feb 1 1994</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Pearl was in the hospital with pneumonia and though she was unaware, they decorated her room and had a party. She had wanted to live to be 90 years old, and did! She passed away the next day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sharon Patrick says that "Olley G" is what is listed in the 1972 LaGrange city directory. Who can tell me how to actually spell Olley's name? Do you have any documents with his signature? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red;"><b>Edit:</b> Sharon was kind enough to go take photos of the markers for me. </span></div>

But, I needed more information first, so I decided to put that on the back burner for a few days. Next, I decided to do a little on Ollie Hicks, which is Great Granddaddy's brother. But, my scanner has died! So, I am going to have to put that on the back burner for a bit too. Then I decided to go way back! Way way back to one of Vesta's ancestors, the Reverend Basil (Bazzel) Lowrey. I'm going to go ahead and say, that I don't have any real documentation on this, only leads from the internet that lead me to believe this information is correct, so lets go....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

She didn't get too live very long, but she did marry Aaron Wesley Hunsucker and they had two children, Vesta Hunsucker and Ira Hunsucker. </div>

Vesta (my great grandmother) married Robert Henry Hicks. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm slowly working on getting information to confirm this Hunsucker tree. I got the information about the Lowreys from an internet site several years ago. Sadly, I saved the pictures, but not the name of the website I got the information from. That is a prime example of why you should always cite your sources when doing genealogy. If I had cited my source from the internet, I could go back and do more research. As of now, I have to trust that the pictures are who I claim them to be, and I have to hope that where ever I got the information that the Reverend was Vesta's great grand parents is correct.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you have any information let me know. </div>

In this picture it looks like Luther is placing a ring on Mary's finger! They are both smiling and it seems to be a happy moment. The photograph was linked to Luther and Mary's findagrave memorial (#37717636 use the link at the top of the blog to find it.) It was posted by someone named Jim T. I don't know who that is, but I am guessing he may be related to us in some way because he had this picture. I am going to send him an email to find out. </div>

I had grand plans for my blog this Christmas season. Alas, it is December 21 and I haven't made the time to add anything to it until now. You know how hectic it gets this month! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hope everyone will enjoy this little bit I can manage right now. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
These are some of the Hicks or Harris kids with Santa. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The back of this first picture says "C.W. Harris c/o Lucille Gro. $1.49 3/3.4" I'm pretty sure it is not Clarence W. Harris, he was born in 1910. This kid looks to be between 3 and 5 years old or so, and the picture's quality is too clear and dark to be from 1915. I'm thinking this is one of the Harris kids and that it was taken at a shop. C.W. Harris's name is on the back so that they know who is going to pick it up. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If you know who this kid is, please comment at the end of the post, so I can correctly identify it.<br />
<span style="color: red;">UPDATE: I got a message from Floyd Harris, that this picture is his youngest brother, Bruce Harris, who was born in 1953. Thanks Floyd!</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This one is Brenda & Barbara Hicks. You can see that Barbara is telling Santa what she wants, and Brenda looks like she is trying to figure out if Santa's beard is real or not. The back of the picture is labeled "Brenda & Barbara Hicks w/ Santa Claus (Bob & Flo's Daughter's)" . I doubt that Bob or Flo would have labeled it this way, so this picture must have belonged to someone else, maybe Vesta? or maybe Willena. These pictures were all found in the same box. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I believe it was my sister, Kimberly Hicks who told me that when she and a few of the other cousins were visiting Great Grandaddy's house during the holidays they would sit in front of the fireplace and wait to see if Santa would come talk to them. Great Grandaddy's house has what I call a double fireplace. The two bedrooms shared a fireplace in the middle. So, the kids would be on one side, and Santa (I think Uncle Bob) would be on the other side and talk to them to find out if they had been good or bad that year.</div>

It was fake. Mama built it herself...laid every brick. On the other side of that chimney was the closet to the front bedroom of our house. That is where somebody, usually Daddy, would go and start with "ho ho ho". All the little ones would run over to "talk" to or "look" for Santa. Great fun...great memories!</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have a large group of photographs that are "unknowns". I call them the "Hicks or Hunsucker Collection". Within that collection is a group of photographs all featuring this chair. The pictures all date from between 1920 - 1940. I know this because the back of the photographs look like this: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigBLJEJI6HJnBNvaPCNtDyM9IANjK4tgS66ztHaxkycAdTPYyXTpOPBhrxSmy8kB3EJb87wVJm9qedbVAMRESv2Na_TkseweJyCCG7hlh0HN597nERpjy1KFOw827R2IypyhAoOixEJ_A/s1600/IMG_20131122_223624_890.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigBLJEJI6HJnBNvaPCNtDyM9IANjK4tgS66ztHaxkycAdTPYyXTpOPBhrxSmy8kB3EJb87wVJm9qedbVAMRESv2Na_TkseweJyCCG7hlh0HN597nERpjy1KFOw827R2IypyhAoOixEJ_A/s320/IMG_20131122_223624_890.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Many photo post cards have manufacturer marks to identify the paper the postcard was printed on. In this case, and in all the cases featuring the chair, the paper says "DEFENDER" with a diamond where the stamp would go. This manufacturer used this mark between 1920 and 1940. I took the liberty to mark "1920 -1940" on the back of all these photographs because as of right now, that is all I know about them. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The only book I have on fashion, stops around 1900. So, it will take a while to pinpoint the clothing styles of these children. I don't think that all the photographs were taken at the same time. Likely, this was just a favorite prop for this photographer. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I do have one clue though. This picture says "Myra Elizabeth Hunsucker" on the back. But, who is Myra? I haven't found her in my family tree. Robert Henry married Vesta Hunsucker, so Myra must be a niece of Vesta's or in some way related. Because this photograph is labeled, I can assume that all the models are Hunsuckers. As, families often lived in the same area, and frequented the same photographer. Too bad there is no photographer's mark. If there was, I could research the photographer's place of business and then figure out who was living in the area of the photographer around 1920 -1940. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This family photograph features the chair. The low waist and the length of skirt on the mother, looks like the 1920s to me. From a brief search on Google, it looks like the 1930's dresses had higher and tighter waists. I have an earlier picture that I believe features this same baby, but not the chair. The hat looks identical in both photos. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have another clue to the chair portraits. It involves a picture of a little girl without the chair. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXt9Y4ZNNoHyibXBbUCzBsl0Pdll2Y0OU8upHHC8BCTIqUnnxyi9EmmUvh1ErmhNALtpOeg0YWv2_Ea9MHOgtyI1DVfxLW9SqGf9-97AF_JnaVLqLp_PNLK24qPYII1GO8BNraAuwJuS8/s1600/Dorothy+Hunsucker.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXt9Y4ZNNoHyibXBbUCzBsl0Pdll2Y0OU8upHHC8BCTIqUnnxyi9EmmUvh1ErmhNALtpOeg0YWv2_Ea9MHOgtyI1DVfxLW9SqGf9-97AF_JnaVLqLp_PNLK24qPYII1GO8BNraAuwJuS8/s320/Dorothy+Hunsucker.jpg" width="199" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The back of this picture says "Dorothy Hunsucker". </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I actually have several pictures of this girl. She has distinct facial characteristics and expression. But this is the only photograph that is labeled. I compared this picture to another chair picture. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1iBjyP9ACf9s_g0pQh8SetFtyjIyux5eWiV48RVrqdAUWVMd3CUU8Gu9NozNxqHZ76praluNs5ua0UtGaU-4dWrBBf_i5EeDCICtZJYosoyjty_a2M_k4Qr51nkW_16KNf0dodNKp3KQ/s1600/mom+and+Dorothy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1iBjyP9ACf9s_g0pQh8SetFtyjIyux5eWiV48RVrqdAUWVMd3CUU8Gu9NozNxqHZ76praluNs5ua0UtGaU-4dWrBBf_i5EeDCICtZJYosoyjty_a2M_k4Qr51nkW_16KNf0dodNKp3KQ/s320/mom+and+Dorothy.jpg" width="194" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It looks like this is Dorothy to me. Another brief Google search leads me to believe that this was in the 20's also because of the mom's hair. But, she is showing off a lot of leg in this picture. Was that appropriate? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have another picture that I labeled "Probably Dorothy and sister". </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKy0R6Kw0OK710TQn1QAGh0szOjSBnCmeiZJy4o1Imt7zEHfevXsMnA7ataaPNDiXi_WMaWW3DS7-yeJtHqi3wWuqvCIfyedjpzs4k0w7FxmOm-SqdTpBu6En1Z8PJ7vCMHA7QoWGr5B8/s1600/older+Dorothy+maybe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKy0R6Kw0OK710TQn1QAGh0szOjSBnCmeiZJy4o1Imt7zEHfevXsMnA7ataaPNDiXi_WMaWW3DS7-yeJtHqi3wWuqvCIfyedjpzs4k0w7FxmOm-SqdTpBu6En1Z8PJ7vCMHA7QoWGr5B8/s320/older+Dorothy+maybe.jpg" width="206" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And finally, I have an picture of an adult Dorothy, that is labeled. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxYpgEooUaJFTsPzdqENtegwanDvbmN_atgCyC2P3gPqJoI_IHd_ZGfkDiGHqM7RV5BZZFVjSDChyphenhyphenvOVhVFzp8-Lbc99cgLpZej-8DKba92qd_v3Jpm7m-v7muQJClztMlw772HiAr7sM/s1600/Dorothy+Hunsucker+%25282%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxYpgEooUaJFTsPzdqENtegwanDvbmN_atgCyC2P3gPqJoI_IHd_ZGfkDiGHqM7RV5BZZFVjSDChyphenhyphenvOVhVFzp8-Lbc99cgLpZej-8DKba92qd_v3Jpm7m-v7muQJClztMlw772HiAr7sM/s320/Dorothy+Hunsucker+%25282%2529.jpg" width="317" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Could this be the same girl? It is labeled Dorothy Hunsucker. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have one other picture, not involving the chair. But I believe it was taken in the same studio as the chair, because the carpet is the same. It also has the DEFENDER manufacture mark on the back. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM3dtrcDozK_mQXmuVfK6DGEnRmNLmSe6-pdA9dY7xi5P5bJIZGMXSqQ9Vkre4w-IGCSrw9bEpBvugJE_SWX4NNcFTZjPlNCuwnK2Bj6D80Yr-YqhCEk3xRNjSYSwNucQ5X7nunLfBOI8/s1600/016+(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM3dtrcDozK_mQXmuVfK6DGEnRmNLmSe6-pdA9dY7xi5P5bJIZGMXSqQ9Vkre4w-IGCSrw9bEpBvugJE_SWX4NNcFTZjPlNCuwnK2Bj6D80Yr-YqhCEk3xRNjSYSwNucQ5X7nunLfBOI8/s320/016+(2).jpg" width="186" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My educated guess, is that all the subjects here are Hunsuckers. They must all be related to Vesta, or they may even be Vesta. Vesta Hunsucker was born in 1893. She would have been in her late 20's early 30's in this time frame. Vesta married Robert Henry Hicks on November 21 1909. </div>

Sometimes when you get going on findagrave, you get lost. You keep finding ancestors and clues and photographs, and that leads to questions and more questions.<br />
I started with looking for the tombstones of Martha Jane Gourd Hicks (1825 - 1900) and her husband Harold Hicks (1811 -1880). Martha Jane and Harold are the grandparents of Robert Henry Hicks, and the parents of Larkin Hicks, and my great great great grandparents. ....I think that's right. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I found Martha Jane in Grove Level Community Cemetery. With a picture! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg407TADAYfpWEOHl-38d1RQhzLpN4f2HVb-F9U8ojKynImGbRK9tuZd4Nvmmxi2CnnrsOyDNi-n3_ktzrmWAGdJ-AvGfRZBCNtPMZQqy52jHt2E2cBpcz6JQy0GnrxInyQz_d0i55m_sg/s1600/Martha+Jane+Gourd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg407TADAYfpWEOHl-38d1RQhzLpN4f2HVb-F9U8ojKynImGbRK9tuZd4Nvmmxi2CnnrsOyDNi-n3_ktzrmWAGdJ-AvGfRZBCNtPMZQqy52jHt2E2cBpcz6JQy0GnrxInyQz_d0i55m_sg/s320/Martha+Jane+Gourd.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
findagrave memorial # 100876106</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Her tombstone says that she was born on Nov 5 1826. My research says 1825. I don't know where I got my dates from, so that will have to be something I look up later. You can't always trust the birth dates on really old tombstones. Sometimes the people just didn't know or couldn't remember. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have not been able to find her husband on findagrave, nor on billiongraves.com, nor on USGenweb Tombstone project. I'll have to keep on the look out for him. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Then I went for a search on Larkin and Mary Jane Gassaway Hicks. (Great Granddaddy's parents.) I did find that someone put their information on findagrave.com but no pictures. I have put a request for a picture, but we will have to wait until a volunteer goes out to Pleasant Hope Cemetery in Floyd County Georgia to search for them and take the picture. I went out there once with my husband, Chris, and we could not find Larkin nor Mary Jane. Their findagrave memorial #'s are Larkin: 11510268 and Mary Jane's is 11510269. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
A person named Karlene, a volunteer for findagrave, entered their information on findagrave.com. But, I think she must have just got the information out of a book or death records or something. Otherwise, why not add the picture, if you are already surveying a cemetery. I have contacted her via email to see if she would transfer ownership of the virtual memorials to me so I can add the correct information about their children. We'll see what happens. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also virtually visited Willena and her first baby, Henry. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Why do I give you these memorial numbers? You can go to findagrave.com and go to the "search grave records" link on the right side of their page. Instead of filling out all the research queries, you can simply type in the number of the memorial and go right there. I also have a link to findagrave on this blog. My virtual name on findagrave.com is Stompee.</div>

Bernice had been married previously to a John Scott. Bernice and John had one daughter, Inez.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are a lot of people in this picture. Back to Front Left to Right: Willena, Henry, Vesta, Bernice, Glen, Ralph, Larkin, Robert, Ed Harris, Jr., Woodrow, Clarence, Inez. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When I first saw this picture, and saw that Inez was labeled here. I didn't know who she was. The only Inez I knew of was the little girl who burned from fire. I just came across an email from someone who found me on ancestry.com. This lady, Joyce, sent me an email telling me that Bernice's first husband was John Scott, and that she had a daughter Inez. That is when I remembered I had a picture of an Inez, and here it is. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Joyce also sent me part of a copy of an article from the Weekly Tribune-News Cartersville, GA from January 12 1950. The article is titled Three Cartersville People Die in Collision. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
According to the article, on January 8th 1950 at 12:45 in the morning, Woodrow, Bernice, Bernice's mother and brother were riding in a 1936 Oldsmobile and were hit head on with a dump truck driven by a young 20 year old guy named Jack D. Rhoden. Bernice's mother, Mrs. Lee Alton Willis Sr. (Etta) and Jack D Rhoden died at the scene of the accident on Canton Road. Bernice's brother, Bradley died about 4 hours later at the Howell-Quillian Clinic. Woodrow suffered a bad laceration on his head, mouth and lip and had bruises and abrasions. Both of Bernice's legs were broken in the accident. One in several places, and she also suffered severe lacerations, bruises and abrasions. </div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Picture of the Car Wreck</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Part of the article is missing. But it looks like Jack D Rhoden had a bad driving record. Mr. Rhoden's passenger, Fred Tolbert of Dahlonega said that Rhoden was driving the dump truck as fast as it would run and with no lights. Then the article is cut off. But another part on the side says that someone reported the dump truck as almost wrecking them on Christmas Eve. The article ends with "Mrs. Cantrell was returning to her home....when suddenly appeared from the south, and crashed into the rear of the Cantrell machine. Rhoden pleaded with Mrs. Can- that is the end of the article.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It seems, Mr. Rhoden may have pleaded for Mrs. Cantrel to not call the police. But, if she had done so, and Rhoden had been sited, or had his license revoked, that maybe Bernice's mother and brother wouldn't have been killed. I have emailed the newspaper, to see if they had a way to find the article for me, so I can get the missing information. I will update the article if they respond. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Please leave a comment or email me if you have more information for this story.</b> I also would like to know if Woodrow and Bernice ever had children. I would like to know where they are buried too. I have a date of death for Woodrow as January 28 1989, but I'm not sure where I got that information from.</div>

<br />
In a previous post, I spoke about Inez Hicks. She died from burns when she caught fire in 1928. I always assumed she died immediately, but unfortunately her death certificate states that she lived a for a few hours.<br />
There were three other babies that were born and then died before Inez was born.<br />
<br />
There was Aron A Hicks. According to the Family Bible, he was born in Whitfield County Georgia on March 22 1911. Vesta would have been 5 days shy of her 18th birthday. (Robert was 18 and Vesta 16 when they married).<br />
<br />
Then there was Annie Lee who was born on December 31 1912 also in Whitfield County Georgia. I have her as "Carrie Lee" in my Family Tree Maker program. I'm not sure where I got that from. I am going to have to do some digging through the files to see where that came from. But, the family bible, has hand written "Annie Lee" so I think that is probably correct.<br />
<br />
Aron and Annie both died in the same year, just months apart from each other. According to the family bible, Annie passed first on February 3 1913, she wasn't even 2 months old. Then Aron passed on June 3 1913, he would have been 2 years old.<br />
<br />
Then there was Ira E Hicks, named after Vesta's brother Ira. The family bible shows that he was born on January 12 1919 and that he died on February 27th 1919, only 1 month old. I have found his death certificate through the Virtual Vault from the Georgia Archives website. It says that he passed from "Bronchial Pneumonia" The copy I have is of a low quality, but I think it also says that a contributing factor was Measles.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdyiUcgkqkDmYJxD-mKuS9AgHtXlOp3EKt5Rlp3D9VtuwNWxappuGQC_pi5yJyKxZTBe3tY2J8xXw9CF7r2MTfpDm98i5_69sEPH2AYm-FzBcbbajAT5i6TI_ycoMsP9KH1-22rJqwMCM/s1600/Hicks_Ira.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="315" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdyiUcgkqkDmYJxD-mKuS9AgHtXlOp3EKt5Rlp3D9VtuwNWxappuGQC_pi5yJyKxZTBe3tY2J8xXw9CF7r2MTfpDm98i5_69sEPH2AYm-FzBcbbajAT5i6TI_ycoMsP9KH1-22rJqwMCM/s320/Hicks_Ira.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am still looking for death certificates for Annie and Aron. I am also looking for burials on findagrave.com and billiongraves.com for all four of the children. I haven't been able to find them on any site. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As far as I know, there are no photographs of Aron, Annie, or Ira. But, last year we discovered a treasure box of photographs in the house where Robert Henry and Vesta lived, and later Uncle Bob. There are a lot of unidentified baby photographs. One of them is this postmortem photograph.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSPIqVjO31xftwx3x2xbx0ZGGgoTKx54OTpUdDyejQkwCiW4pXFGDowy50y9MxmiIWnIaf0c7rmTM0pp8_g29OqkpcbIwl2g5WfW1dYQZcSzLkiwY7PDCc5oDclrpfb7AvYeX27Om0nvI/s1600/013+(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSPIqVjO31xftwx3x2xbx0ZGGgoTKx54OTpUdDyejQkwCiW4pXFGDowy50y9MxmiIWnIaf0c7rmTM0pp8_g29OqkpcbIwl2g5WfW1dYQZcSzLkiwY7PDCc5oDclrpfb7AvYeX27Om0nvI/s320/013+(2).jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If this is a Hicks baby, it looks like it might be a boy because it looks like he is wearing a jacket instead of a dress. This baby looks about 2 years old, doesn't he? If so, this could be Aron. This picture has a post card on the back. In the corner where the stamp would go is a manufacturer's mark "CYKO" in fancy text. That mark was used between 1904 - 1920s. Therefore, it does correspond to the time of little Aron's death.</div>
